Soil and water conservation is a common challenge for the countries of the SUDOE region, especially considering the impact of certain agricultural practices. In this respect, the presence of phosphates in excessive quantities can lead to significant pollution risks. Moreover, little is known about how to reduce it.
Objectives
The objectives of the project are:
✅ Adopt a comprehensive strategy to prevent and reduce phosphate pollution.
✅ Implement a monitoring model in 6 different agricultural systems to predict contamination risks.
✅ Train personnel from relevant phosphate management entities and disseminate innovative solutions generated by the project.
Pilot sites
Six pilot sites will be studied in France, Spain and Portugal. They will cover the following types of production: cereals, vines, olives, extensive livestock, ducks for foie gras, horticulture, fodder and field vegetables.
Strategies and action plans
Phos4Cycle seeks to develop a strategy and action plan to reduce the impact of phosphates on agriculture and livestock. It includes a pilot project to improve monitoring of phosphate fluxes and forecasting the risk of eutrophication in watersheds.
